Visit the City of Berat

The City of a Thousand Windows – Ottoman architecture, a historic castle and the charming old streets of Mangalem.

Berat is known around the world as the “City of a Thousand Windows”, thanks to its traditional houses that rise one above another along the hillside of the Mangalem neighbourhood, creating a distinctive panorama. Its characteristic architecture and rich cultural heritage have earned the city a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The journey from Golem to Berat takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours by car, making the city a convenient destination for a day trip.

You can begin your visit at Berat Castle, one of the city's most remarkable historical attractions, where life continues to this day within its centuries-old walls. During your walk through the castle, you can discover ancient Byzantine churches and visit the National Iconographic Museum Onufri. From this vantage point, you can enjoy impressive views over the Osum River and Berat's historic neighbourhoods.

After visiting the castle, make your way down to the Mangalem neighbourhood, where narrow cobblestone streets, traditional houses, small artisan shops and characteristic cafés await you. This is one of the city's most distinctive areas and a wonderful opportunity to experience its architecture and atmosphere up close.

To make your visit even more enjoyable, you can stop at one of Berat's traditional restaurants and try characteristic Albanian dishes while enjoying views of the city and the Osum River.

Berat is a destination worth visiting for families, couples and anyone who wants to discover another side of Albania beyond its beaches. Its history, culture, architecture and traditions make it a special stop during your holiday in Golem.
